Recently Nick has turned his attention to fish species, against a backdrop of the dramatic decline in the world’s fish-stocks and the evermore apparent need for more a responsible approach to sustainable fishing methods.

Inspired by ancient Japanese art forms and Gyotaku fish printing Nick makes prints out of real fish species and takes x-ray photographic images to create artistic impressions of his subjects.

For his Gyotaku style fish prints Nick applies the paint straight onto the fish and using thin Japanese paper takes a print directly from its surface, ‘rather like a brass rubbing. ‘ In this way he is able to render an accurate record of the fish’s size and mouldings, capturing the details in their patterns, textures, scales and shapes.

In partnership with the Natural History Museum, Nick has been awarded access to their x-ray facilities, where he has taken x-ray photographs to record the inside structure of fish species.  The result is a faithful record and a beautiful and fascinating series of images.
